We are honored that our recent proof-of-principle study on automated cardiac arrest detection and emergency service alerting using smartwatch technology has been the subject of an editorial in Resuscitation.
In the editorial, titled “Wristwatch to Lifesaver: The Promise and Challenges of Device-Independent Automated Cardiac Arrest Detection”, Federico Semeraro and Lorenzo Gamberini reflect on the potential of the technology demonstrated in our study and discuss the steps that will be needed to bring automated cardiac arrest detection closer to real-world use.
The authors highlight the promise of using commercially available smartwatches to detect cardiac arrest and automatically activate the emergency response system. At the same time, they discuss important challenges that remain, including reducing false alarms, validating the technology under real-world conditions, accounting for differences between smartwatch devices, and addressing practical and regulatory considerations.
We are grateful to see our work discussed in this broader perspective and to see growing attention for the potential role of wearable technology in improving the recognition of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.
